The National Ballet of Moldova - La Sylphide

Maastricht

An enchanting romantic ballet in which a Scottish farmer's son leaves his fiancée to follow an air spirit, created by Filippo Taglioni and celebrated by August Bournonville.

La Sylphide is a rarely performed romantic classical ballet from the early 19th century, alongside Giselle of the crown jewels of the era. The story is about James, a Scottish farmer's son, who leaves his fiancée to follow an air spirit (Sylphide). Filippo Taglioni created this piece in 1832 for his daughter Marie Taglioni, who danced the lead role. This ballet had a great influence on the art of ballet and is considered the first romantic ballet.

Danish ballet master August Bournonville wanted to recreate the original piece with the Royal Danish Ballet, but due to high costs of the Paris Opéra, he created his own version based on the original libretto, with music by Herman Serverin Løvenskiöld. This version is one of Bournonville's most celebrated works and is still performed by some top ballet companies worldwide.
