This winter, Belgian choreographer Jeroen Verbruggen will be presenting a revamped, magical version of the ballet classic The Nutcracker. This contemporary version presents a new perspective on Tchaikovsky’s famous music, without a traditional Christmas tree, sugarplum fairy, or gifts – but with all the magic audiences have come to expect from The Nutcracker.
Although Verbruggen’s version remains true to E.T.A. Hoffman’s original story, he gives it a modern twist. Here, Marie – sometimes called Clara in other versions – is not a young girl, but an adolescent who feels lost in her changing body. In her dreams, she goes in search of herself, in which the story is all about ‘cracking’ your own shell to discover your own identity.
