Venezuelan playwright Cabrujas once compared the nation to a hotel, a temporary place that is not owned by its inhabitants and therefore does not need to be refurbished. The state plays the role of manager of this hotel, but fails to provide its guests with a basic level of comfort.
Peruvian artist Arturo Kameya has transformed Marres house into a hotel where the ghosts of Peru's failed state have taken up residence. The facade displays huge paintings with modern messianic imagery. Inside, visitors will find all sorts of scenes, including a tiled bathhouse masquerading as a restaurant, a multi-armed beer fountain and a large upstairs room with floating fish. The interior is an allegory of the Peruvian state. It reflects a make-believe world where truth is less important than what is conjured up out of sheer necessity.

The artist is making the exhibition in collaboration with Claudia Martínez Garay.
BIO
The multimedia works of Arturo Kameya (Peru, 1984) bring together a range of visual cultural languages and connect disparate stories, popular myths and historical events. His work blends history, mythology and popular culture to depict the daily struggles and contradictions of his native land.
