Fort Sint Pieter

Maastricht

A 300-year-old fort at the highest point of the city.

With flying colours

Fort Sint Pieter proudly towers over Maastricht. With the Maastricht flag always flying, you can see the highest point of South Limburg's capital from afar, situated at the top of Sint-Pietersberg. This special and historic piece of Maastricht was built 300 years ago. Throughout the centuries, Maastricht has been besieged and conquered several times. In 1673, city commander Daniël Wolff von Dopff decided to build the fortress to protect Maastricht. The street towards Château Neercanne (right opposite Sint Pietersberg) is named after its creator, by the way.

Pentagonal defences

What you will immediately notice is the fort's pentagonal shape. From the fortress, Maastricht's southern ramparts were defended from the end of the 17th century. Any southern attack on the city could be repelled from then on. In 1794, the fort was attacked ‘from the back’ by the French, during the siege by Kiéber. But the fortress built against heavy force remained pretty much standing. In the early 19th century, it was still considerably modernised and restored to meet the requirements of the time.
