The Onze Lieve Vrouweplein square is in the centre of Maastricht. The square is in the oldest part of the city within the late Roman castellum.
For a long time, the Basilica of Our Lady was a centre of power in the city, with its own community (chapter) and area. The current square used to be the cemetery with another parish church next to it. With the passage of time, the cemetery and parish church disappeared, just like the Roman temple that once stood here along the road that was located on the north side of the present square. Roman remains have been preserved in the basement of the hotel that replaced the parish church.
