‘Ariadne auf Naxos’ is a tragicomic opera by Richard Strauss, based on a libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The opera is set in the house of a wealthy man, where a party night is being prepared. The programme consists of a serious opera based on the myth of Ariadne, a farce in a burlesque entourage, and a fireworks show as a finale.
Due to time constraints, the host decides that the opera and farce should be performed at the same time so as not to jeopardise the fireworks show.
