Philzuid - Lei Wang performs solo in Barber's Violin Concerto

Maastricht

Sjostakovitsj' Ninth Symphony and Barber's Violin Concerto with Lei Wang promise an evening of satirical and virtuosic sounds.

Sjostakovitsj' Ninth symphony, composed in 1945, was expected as a triumphant conclusion to his three ‘war symphonies’. Instead, he presented a shorter, satirical work that disconcerted Stalin. The symphony ranges from brutal gallop with slapstick elements to inky melancholy in the bassoon solos, which is typical of Sjostakovitsj.

In addition, concertmaster Lei Wang will solo in Barber's Violin Concerto, known for its famous Adagio for Strings. Lei describes it as one of the most popular and widely played violin concertos of the 20th century, with beautiful, profound melodies and a vituperative finale.
