Artist meets scientist #3: Roma culture and the work of Malgorzata Mirga-Tas

Maastricht

Encounters between art and science at Bonnefanten and Studium Generale debunk myths and promote a nuanced picture of the Roma community.

Several times a year, Bonnefanten and Studium Generale organise inspiring meetings between artists, curators and scientists. These meetings promote dialogue between art and science, with speakers exploring what these two worlds have to offer each other from their own expertise, working methods and themes.

On the final day of the exhibition Malgorzata Mirga-Tas: This is not the end of the road, Dr Anita van der Hulst, journalist and social historian, will give a lecture on the perception of Roma from the late 15th century to the present. She discusses how Roma have been portrayed over the centuries and what influence this has had on their social position.

The lecture will be followed by a conversation with Prof. Dr. Huub van Baar, professor of political science at KU Leuven. They discuss the role of Roma artists in debunking strong myths and stereotypes. Roma activism, fuelled in part by Roma art, plays an increasing role in combating racism and promoting a more nuanced image of the Roma community.

The event is free with a valid admission ticket to the museum.
