Vera Gulikers (1991) won the Royal Prize for Painting in 2017. In 2018, she was a resident at the Jan van Eyck Academy. She took her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht (2014-2016) and obtained her Master of Fine Arts at Sint Lucas in Antwerp (2016).
In her research, Gulikers delved into the representation of musicians in the history of painting and music. Gulikers noted that female figures almost always play a supporting role in the events depicted, with the roles as caring woman (Mary in the biblical stories) and sinner (Eve and Mary Magdalene) being the two most common. In her mural, Gulikers chooses to give women from art and music history no longer a supporting role, but a leading role, in which they take centre stage as an independent person.
